Rome heroes hailed as Middlesbrough's finest - March 16, 2006

Middlesbrough captain Gareth Southgate hailed their UEFA Cup success at Roma last night as the club's finest moment.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's crucial away goal opener helped them into the UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

Skipper Southgate, 35, said: "Jimmy gave us something to hang on to. It must be the best night in the club's history."

He added: "We knew what a good side they are and it was tough. We couldn't get out of our own half at one point and needed a couple of fantastic saves from Mark Schwarzer.

"We always felt we'd need to score an away goal to go through and thankfully we got one through Jimmy."

Boss Steve McClaren said: "I am so proud of my players. Nights like this do not come along very often so you have to enjoy them. We've beaten the favourites.

"But everybody in the dressing room is saying we've achieved nothing yet and we want to go on from here."
