Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been given the green light to launch a £25 million bid for Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres.
The Mirror says Torres, 22, was Spain's top scorer in their qualifying campaign and has told World Cup team-mates that he will move to Old Trafford.
United had been behind Spurs and Newcastle in the queue of interested clubs but Fergie's fall-out with Ruud van Nistelrooy has led to him looking around at other strikers. Torres has two years left on his contract but Atletico want to cash in.
