Spurs boss confident Mido won't join English rival

Tottenham boss Martin Jol is convinced Roma striker Mido will not sign for a Premiership rival.

"Maybe he will go back to Roma, you never know," said Jol.
"We could have done business with them earlier. But I told him if he scores between 12 and 15 goals and looks sharp, then he has got his deal. We will wait and see what happens.
"He has scored 11 goals and fulfilled his part of the bargain. I don't regret not tying it up before but he was on loan and normally you take a player on loan for a year or six months, but we managed to get him for 18.
"It was probably the first time in the history of football to get somebody like him on loan for 18 months.
"I still feel he wants to stay here and he likes it here. It is a matter of negotiating - you know what I mean."

Brussels talks for Man City keeper De Vlieger

FC Brussels have held talks with Manchester City goalkeeper Geert de Vlieger.
The Belgium international is off contract in the summer and ready to leave Eastlands after an injury-plagued two seasons.
Brussels chairman Johan Vermeersch has already held a series of talks with De Vlieger about a return home.

Inter Milan's Mancini interested in Newcastle job

Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini has expressed interest in the Newcastle United job.
The Evening Chronicle says the former Leicester Coty striker has indicated that he would love a crack of the job at St James' Park and his representatives have been in touch with United.

Palace chairman slams "Birmingham imbeciles"

Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan has slammed Birmingham City's board as "imbeciles".
Jordan added he would like to punch Blues co-owner David Sullivan and said "the best thing about Birmingham is the road out".
There has been bad blood between the two clubs since Birmingham poached manager Steve Bruce three years ago.

At the launch of the new Champions League manager game, Jordan told the Mirror: "I have got no issues with Steve Bruce - I have got an issue with the imbeciles he works for.
"I think they are disingenuous. The ethics with which they do business, I don't appreciate. I have had enough dealings with them to be able to have that view.
"Am I surprised? They sell dildos for a living. That gives you a judgement on what they may or may not be."
Sullivan, who is president of Birmingham, has made part of his fortune in the porn industry. And, unsurprisingly, Jordan will have little sympathy if Birmingham do go down.
"I think in life you get what you deserve," he said. "Despite my distaste for the owners, I don't wish any club bad luck. If Birmingham go down, am I going to shed a tear? No. Because the best thing about Birmingham is the road out.
"The reality is that if they go down, they deserve to go down."

Real Madrid's Helguera keen on Barcelona move

Real Madrid defender Ivan Helguera has refused to rule out a move to Barcelona.
Helguera is fed up with being frozen out at Real and ahead of tomorrow's big clash with Barca said: "Me, join Barcelona ... why not?
"I will always do my best for my family. This will be the first time I will not be involved in a Real Madrid-Barcelona game."

Barcelona have first refusal on Arsenal's Cesc

Barcelona can block any move from Real Madrid for Arsenal whiz Cesc Fabregas, it has been revealed.

DiarioSport says Barca have a first refusal option on Cesc, which allows them to sign the midfielder should they match any rival bid.
The clause was engineered by former Barca vice-president Sandro Rosell during negotiations with Arsenal three years ago.
Meanwhile, Barca coach Frank Rijkaard admits Cesc's progress may not have been so meteoric if he'd stayed at the Nou Camp.
"It's not ideal for clubs to lose players from their juniors," he said. "But I understand this is how the market works.
"Hopefully Cesc can continue his great progress, but if he had remained here he may not be playing now. The certain thing is that moving to Arsenal has worked well for him."

Caparros facing Deportivo La Coruna axe

The future of Deportivo La Coruna coach Joaquin Caparros is in major doubt today.

The official newspaper of Depor led yesterday with the headline: 'If you leave, another will arrive'. The article slammed Caparros for "airing the club's business on the street" after the coach blasted president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro's reigning in of spending on his squad.
Caparros only signed a new deal this season through to 2008, but he could be on his way out before the end of next week.
Already the likes of Javier Aguirre (Osasuna), Bernd Schuster (Getafe) and former coach Javier Irureta are being linked with Caparros' job.
The situation will be resolved one way or another when Caparros meets with Lendoiro next week.

Real Madrid set for Eriksson talks tomorrow

Real Madrid will jet in England boss Sven Goran Eriksson for talks tomorrow.

The Sun says a representative of the La Liga giants flew into London last night in a bid to lure the England coach to the Spanish capital.
Eriksson is now favourite to get the job after AC Milan told Real their boss Carlo Ancelotti was going nowhere.
The representative, who arrived at Heathrow Airport last night, is a close friend of the Real board and a long-time associate of Eriksson.
And he is confident of persuading Eriksson to become boss.
Real are hoping to have an agreement next week.

Beckham: Nothing can shake my Real Madrid commitment

David Beckham has committed himself to Real Madrid for next season.
"The only way I'd leave," he said, "would be if the club said they didn't want me, and they haven't said that."
Beckham, 31 in May, has yet to renew his contract, which expires in 2008, but he remains confident of continuing at the club.
"Madrid are very keen on getting talks under way and we are very keen on getting those talks under way as well, but there have been changes at the club. Talks are always with the president himself and, every time you go to sort something out, something else changes," he said tellingly. "But I've got used to that now and there might be talks in the next few weeks.

"I know things change very quickly but I'm happy with my lifestyle and my game, so I want to stay. It would be a good thing if it gets sorted before the World Cup but even if it didn't I wouldn't go into the tournament worried about my future. One way or another it will get sorted out."
Beckham said that even if England won the World Cup, returning home a hero would not be sufficient temptation to forsake Madrid - not even if he scored a hat-trick in the final.
With a big grin he said: "If that happened, it would be amazing and I'd enjoy celebrating but, no, not even then. I love playing for Real, I'm happy here and I don't want to move my family about any more. The kids are happy, my wife is happy and we have just bought a new house. There is no reason to go anywhere else."
And, though Beckham has backed Eriksson as an ideal candidate to take over at the Bernabéu, he was keen to distance his own future from that of the England manager. Eriksson's arrival would be a bonus, not the deciding factor.
"I will stay, whoever they bring in. I want to sort my contract out anyway, whether Sven comes or not. I want to stay in Madrid and that's separate from the [manager's job]. I love it here."

Liverpool try again for Parma's Bonera

Liverpool are reviving their interest in Parma defender Daniele Bonera.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez rates Bonera highly and tried to sign the Italy international in January, but Parma refused to sell as they battled against relegation.
With investment talks at Parma now on the backburner, the Serie A club will have to sell in the summer and are keen to reopen negotiations with Liverpool over Bonera.

Juventus watching Chelsea's unhappy Drogba

Juventus are interested in unsettled Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.
Drogba is considering his future at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea fans turned on him against Newcastle United last week.
Juve director general Luciano Moggi is well aware of Drogba's unhappiness and has the Ivory Coast international lined up should Zlatan Ibrahimovic decide against signing his new contract.

Lazio chief admits likely Dabo, Liverani exits

Lazio director general Carlo Osti has revealed they've all but given up hope of re-signing midfield pair Fabio Liverani and Ousmane Dabo.

Osti said: "The players coming off contract are free to find agreements with other teams and for this also Lazio are looking around.
"We are considering the domestic and foreign market in order to replace the eventual departures of Liverani and Dabo.
"If we lose Liverani, it will be a defeat for our board."

Werder Bremen eyeing Palermo striker Makinwa

Werder Bremen are interested in Palermo striker Stephen Makinwa.

The exciting Nigeria international is only in his first season at Palermo, but could be on the move again in the summer.
Along with Werder, Premiership pair Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic are also tracking Makinwa leading into the close-season transfer window.
Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini is likely to seek close to £10 million for the forward.

Diana: I'm committed to Sampdoria cause

Sampdoria midfielder Aimo Diana insists he's not agreed to join another club next season.
AC Milan and Fiorentina have been linked with Diana, who said: "In the last days I have read things about me that are not true.
"It is not true that I've come to an agreement with another team, for me at this moment there is only Samp and I'm honored to wear this shirt. I've been here for three seasons and I have always given my best."

Ferguson refuses to concede

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed his side still harbour hopes of confounding the bookmakers and pipping Chelsea to the Premiership title.
No side has won more Premiership points than United in 2006 and after another win on Wednesday - a 1-0 defeat of West Ham - Ferguson believes The Blues' nine-point lead may not be as insurmountable as it would appear.
Ferguson's side have recorded six successive victories and The Red Devils' form has been in stark contrast to the stuttering performances of Chelsea in recent weeks.
With just seven matches of the season remaining United may have already missed the boat in a bid for the title, nevertheless Ferguson believes his side could still have put a few doubts in the minds of the Chelsea team.
"I hope they're thinking about us. If they do slip up then we have to make sure that we are there to take advantage," said Ferguson.
"We've improved and I'm very happy with the nature of our play. You never know what could yet happen. Given the form we're in we're looking forward to all our games.
"We've got a massive game this weekend at Bolton. I hope Chelsea drop points but the most important thing is that we're in such good form, we're winning our matches and you never know where that's going to take us."

Sevilla thrash nine-man Zenit

Sevilla look on course for the Uefa Cup semi-finals after a convincing 4-1 first leg win over quarter-final opponents Zenit St Petersburg.
The Russians endured a miserable evening at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan after having two men sent off by Luxembourg referee Alain Hamer.
The Spanish Primera Liga club took the lead on the quarter hour mark when on-loan striker Javier Saviola headed home Adriano Correia's cross on the left.
To their credit, Zenit took a 1-1 scoreline into the break in Andalucia after Alexander Kerzhakov headed home Andrei Arshavin's cross from the left.
The second half swung the way of the home side, however, as Zenit had Norwegian defender Erik Hagen sent off after he brought down former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur striker Fredi Kanoute in the St Petersburg box for a penalty.
Jose Luis Marti stepped to convert the spot kick for 2-1 on 56 minutes before Saviola extended Sevilla's lead with his second goal of the match ten minutes from the end.
Zenit's misery was compounded when Ashavin was shown a straight red for lashing out at a Sevilla player in injury time.
There was enough time for the Spaniards to cap a fine European win with a fourth goal, as Adriano Correia finished a left-footed effort for 4-1.
The result puts Sevilla within touching distance of a semi-final clash with either Levski Sofia or Schalke, with the second leg taking place in Russia next Thursday.

Spurs announce profits increase

Tottenham have announced six-month pre-tax profits of over £4 million.
The results published on Friday for the period ending December 31 2005 show a profit of £4.4 million - a £3.4 million increase on the same period the previous year.
Turnover has increased from £32.9 million to £36.3 million and chairman Daniel Levy believes the figures bode well for the future of the UEFA Champions League hopefuls.
"We have had an encouraging season to date, progress in the Premier League being tempered by the disappointments in the cup competitions," said Levy in a statement on the club's official website.
"We remain realistic — the FA Premier League is a highly competitive league with little separating the top clubs.
"We shall look to consolidate the areas that have seen change and to continue to improve performance in all departments within the club. Much has been achieved and there is still much to do.
"We will continue to look for excellent young talent in a bid to ensure the club is in the best possible position to prosper now and in the future.
A lot of investment continues to be focused on academy recruits, with scouting taking place throughout the world looking for, and competing for, stars of the future."

Sato earns Japan victory

Japan earned a 1-0 friendly victory over Ecuador courtesy of a late winner from substitute Hisato Sato.
The two World Cup finalists battled it out for 90 minutes with Zico's side deservedly coming out on top after dominating much of the encounter.
Sato grabbed his opportunity by sweeping home a cross from man of the match Alex, after Tatsuhiko Kubo had spurned several chances to break the deadlock.
Poor defending by Keisuke Tsuboi granted Ecuador's Walter Calderon an early opening that he fired over the top but Japan made most of the running.
Kubo somehow contrived to prod Alex's centre just wide when he should have scored and then headed over the bar from another inviting centre by Alex.
One moment of magic lit up the first half as Edwin Tenorio unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot from well outside the box that swerved on its way towards Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi's goal. The former Portsmouth keeper did remarkably well to tip the ferocious drive onto the bar and Japan survived the major scare.
Despite appeals from coach Zico, referee Shamsul Maidin denied Japan a penalty when Keiji Tamada was sent sprawling inside the box.
Johny Baldeon blazed over seconds after the restart but Ecuador were soon on the back foot again with Fricson George very fortunate not to receive a yellow card on two separate occasions.
Tamada was denied when clean through and Kubo also worked the goalkeeper from another Alex cross before Shinjo Ono passed up a decent opportunity to get on the scoresheet.
It all seemed to be adding up to a goalless draw until Alex once again got down the left flank, after some sloppy defending presented Japan possession, and his teasing centre was touched home by Sato.
Japan continued to press and a deflected cross bounced off the bar as they ran out 1-0 victors.

Lopez Caro issues warning

Juan Ramon Lopez Caro has warned his Real Madrid players not make the same mistakes that they made when Barcelona triumphed in the Bernabeu earlier this season as the two sides prepare to meet this weekend.
The Madrid coach hailed Frank Rijkaard's side as one of the best teams in Europe, but remains confident that his team can go to Camp Nou on Saturday and snatch a victory.
Barca eased to a 3-0 victory in the first game in November when Samuel Eto'o opened the scoring before two glorious solo efforts from Ronaldinho saw the home fans give the Brazilian a standing ovation.
Lopez Caro does not want to make things as easy this time around and is keen to reduce the advantage that their arch enemy currently enjoy at the top of the league.
"Barcelona were spectacular," he said, reflecting on the 3-0 reverse. "But the first goal was a lack of concentration and we have to avoid repeating that again.
"They went ahead and stayed on top.
"The three points would be a relief for us. The last thing we want is to lose and we have a duty to fight until the end. Even cutting the gap to eight points would still mean it was very difficult, but we have to try.
"To win, we should not play with 11 forwards. Balance is fundamental. We are really motivated to finish playing at our best. If we can play like we did against Deportivo then we could make it very difficult for them.
"It will be a very hard game for both sides. Barcelona are playing great football and are on another level. It will be special because they are one of the best teams in Europe. The mental preparation will be intense both for them and us.
"I have seen all week a concentration and a dedication that is incredible in my players. If one trains poorly, then you play poorly. They are up for the game because they are strong. What is most important is personality. Without that, you never win."

Lyon boss Houllier chases Newcastle job

Lyon boss Gerard Houllier wants a return to the Premiership with Newcastle United.

The Sun says the former Liverpool chief applied for the St James' Park job even though his current club Lyon have reached the Champions League quarter-finals.
Despite his success this season, Frenchman Houllier admits a return to the Premiership appeals to him. He said: "Of course I would consider managing in England again. Because of my strong ties with Liverpool, England will always be a very special place for me."
Martin O'Neill remains Toon chairman Freddy Shepherd's top choice.
But with the Irishman believed to be more interested in the England job, the Tynesiders are exploring other options.

West Ham's Sheringham: Longevity runs in the family

West Ham veteran Teddy Sheringham says no-one should be surprised he's still playing.

He revealed: "I feel as enthusiastic and fresh as the day I made my debut at 17 for Millwall.
"But I don't understand what all the fuss is about as my dad Paul, at 66, plays tennis five mornings a week and squash five evenings a week.
"Mum Shirley - she'll never forgive me if I tell you how old she is - is out on the golf course five mornings a week no matter what the weather. So me playing once, maybe twice a week is not really that big a deal.
"Sure I've been around long enough to see some major changes in the game but I always remember when John Barnes was the first player to get 10 grand a week.
"Back then, it was wow! But it has all escalated tenfold - it is crazy."

Chelsea's Cole shrugs off Man Utd surge

Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has dismissed Manchester United's late season surge.

Speaking at the launch of this year's Danone Nations Cup, the England ace said: "United are stringing wins together and they are making a fight of it.
"You would expect that from a great club like United with a great manager like Alex Ferguson. He's got his team playing well, they've got six back-to-back wins in the Premiership now and they are putting the pressure on us.
"But that's great. It is what we need and it will only bring the best out of us. We are not looking over our shoulders.
"We know we need four victories to win the league, whatever United do.
"We can stay focused and get them before the FA Cup semi-final - starting with Birmingham."

Arsenal's Cesc: I want to better Lampard

Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas aims to become a better midfielder than Chelsea's Frank Lampard.

Fab, 18, was one of Arsenal's heroes in their 2-0 Champions League win over Juventus on Tuesday.
Now he aims to eclipse Chelsea maestro Lamps.
Fabregas admitted: "Lampard is the complete midfielder because he defends, attacks and scores a lot of goals.
"I'm still not as good as him but I believe I can do it and be just as good - or even BETTER.
"You have to believe in yourself - that's the most important thing."

Blackburn shake hands on Tugay deal

Blackburn Rovers midfielder Tugay has agreed terms on a new contract extension.

The 35-year-old has recently been linked with a lucrative move to Qatar, but boss Mark Hughes insists that the new deal is "near enough agreed."
"I shook his hand, so I took that to mean he is happy with the deal and he is going to sign.
"It means we have a good quality player for next season, and there aren't many of his like in the Premiership."
The former Turkey international joined the club in July 2001 from Glasgow Rangers for £1.3m and his existing deal at Ewood Park was due to expire at the end of this season.
Hughes added: "I don't feel people will take too much notice of his age because he has the ability to set the tone in, and take the sting out of games.
"Given his position and ability, I feel he can influence teams and games for a number of seasons yet."

Bolton boss: Jaaskelainen deal very close

Bolton Wanderers are close to completing contract negotiations with goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, which have gone on for 12 months.

Boss Sam Allardyce believes the 30-year-old Finnish international, who joined the club in 1997, will commit his future to the club after being linked with a move away from the Reebok Stadium.
He said: "The deal with Jussi is very close now. I would have thought it will be done by the back end of this week or the beginning of next at the latest.
"Jussi is one of the players whose value has escalated by being here and they know it, which makes negotiations very difficult.
"We have got on with it the best we can but this has been the longest of the lot."

Pennant commits to Birmingham

Winger Jermaine Pennant will remain loyal to Birmingham and stay with the club - even if they get relegated this season.
He told the club website: "If we go down I won't try to jump ship.
"I will still be playing my football, enjoying it and hopefully will come straight back up.
"I've got a contract for two or three years, so I will definitely stay," the former Arsenal player added.

Basel brush off sorry Boro

Middlesbrough face an uphill battle to keep their Uefa Cup hopes alive after a 2-0 defeat to Basel in the first leg of their quarter final in Switzerland on Thursday night.
Two goals in two devastating minutes just before half time gave Basel a crucial lead to take into the second leg at The Riverside next week.
To complete a miserable night for Boro, Emanuel Pogagtetz was forced off with a broken nose and they need to produce a big performance in the second leg if they are to keep their cup double dreams alive.
Middlesbrough began brightly and they created the first noteworthy chance of the game on nine minutes when Gaizka Mendieta teed up Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink for a shot on the edge of the box which he dragged wide.
The home side had their first sight of goal on 13 minutes when David Degen pulled the ball back for Adelino Eduardo Da Silva, who fired a shot straight at Mark Schwarzer.
Hasselbaink was inches away from breaking the deadlock on 22 minutes with a ferocious free kick from the edge of the box, which fizzed just wide of the far post.
Two minutes later, Basel worked a neat free kick routine for Boris Smiljanic to hit a left-footed shot straight at Schwarzer.
Mile Sterjovski wasted a good opening on 28 minutes when the ball fell invitingly to him inside the box, but his weak volley was comfortably collected by Schwarzer.
Degen was booked for diving just before the half hour mark after going down in the box, as Pogatetz came across to tackle him.
Boro came close to scoring on 33 minutes when Pascal Zuberbuhler somewhat fortuitously tipped Mendieta's swerving shot over the crossbar.
The visitors continued to look dangerous every time they went forward and five minutes before the break, Stewart Downing sent over a great cross which Hasselbaink at full stretch could just not direct on target.
Basel stunned Middlesbrough on 43 minutes when Matias Delgado tried his luck from long range and his shot seemed to catch Schwarzer out, as it took a wicked bounce off the surface before flying over the Australian's dive.
Things got worse for Boro right on the stroke of half time when Eduardo slipped Degen in on goal and the winger coolly slotted the ball past a wrong-footed Schwarzer.

Aguero eyes Reds move

Highly-rated Argentinian teenager Sergio Aguero says that he would rather join European champions Liverpool than German giants Bayern Munich.
Bayern had been looking to make a move for the promising 17-year-old attacker, and were willing to pay around £10 million for his services.
Chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge hinted a bid would be forthcoming sooner rather than later in the hope of getting their foot in the door ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
However, the Independiente youngster says that he would rather join Rafa Benitez's Liverpool - the club he says he supported as a boy.
"If I had to choose a league then it would be the Premier League," Aguero is quoted as saying in the Munich TZ newspaper.
"I have been a Liverpool fan for as long as I can remember and it would be a dream to play there.
"I watched the Champions League final and celebrated every goal as if it was for Independiente."
Benitez has already dipped into the Argentine market to sign young defender Gabriel Paletta from Banfield for next season, and he could make a move for compatriot Aguero.
The 17-year-old, who plays in midfield or up front, is being tipped as the next big thing from South America, and has been backed to make as big an impact as Lionel Messi in Europe.
Benitez is always on the look-out for fresh new talent to bring to Anfield and Aguero's comments will make him confident of beating off a host of top European sides if he decides to make a move.

Juve punish Camoranesi

Juventus are reported to have heavily fined Mauro German Camoranesi following his sending off against Arsenal.
The Italian international was sent off for two bookable offences during Juve's 2-0 UEFA Champions League defeat at Highbury on Tuesday night.
Camoranesi's reaction to being sent off when he blew kisses and ironically applauded the crowd upset Juventus officials and they have decided to punish the player.
It is not the first time this season that Camoranesi has cited controversy and it appears the latest incident could be the last straw.
Reports emanating from Italy suggest Camoranesi has been fined €40,000 (£30,000) for the incident.
The whole matter has cast doubt over the winger's long-term future at Stadio Delle Alpi, with Juventus thought to be willing to let him move on.

Hyypia backs Agger to shine

Liverpool centre half Sami Hyypia believes Daniel Agger will prove to be a massive success at Anfield.
Agger was a big money January signing by Rafa Benitez, with the Dane arriving from Brondby with a lofty reputation.
Reds chief Benitez claimed at the time that Agger was one for the future and Hyypia is convinced the Spanish tactician has unearthed a gem.
"He looks a very talented player who has done really well," said Finnish stopper Hyypia.
"It is not easy for someone of such a young age to come to a top club.
"His debut came in the Birmingham game against Chris Sutton and Emile Heskey, which is by no means the easiest strike partnership to handle.
"But he coped well enough. He also did well against Manchester City and was better again against Newcastle."
Hyypia claims Agger is far from the finished article, but claims the youngster is eager to learn.
"I think those three games showed him enough of what The Premiership is about," added Hyypia. "He is a clever guy and knows where he will have to improve his game to adapt to The Premiership."

Shevchenko to Chelsea's Abramovich: I'll see you in London

A close confidant of AC Milan striker Andrei Shevchenko has played a major role in the Ukrainian's expected move to Chelsea in the summer.

It's emerged today that Shevchenko has told Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich that he's ready to move to London after three years of coaxing.
La Stampa says Sheva told Abramovich recently: "Istanbul still burns inside me. I want to avenge that night. But after that, I will see you in London in the summer."
Kristen Pazik, a close confidant of Sheva's, was spotted at Stamford Bridge recently and also at the club's training HQ. Like Shevchenko, Pazik has been good friends with Abramovich for many years and is now convinced the time is right for Sheva to join Chelsea.
The deal will be worth £35 million - with no guarantee that Milan will accept Hernan Crespo to bring the cash component down. But that won't put off Abramovich.

Arsenal wreck Juventus plans for Liverpool's Gerrard

Arsenal have wrecked Juventus' pursuit of Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

Juve chiefs will drop their push for the England midfielder should they be eliminated from the Champions League at the quarterfinals stage. Juve's expected early exit will cost them £15 million.
Juve's board were serious about signing Gerrard, with director general Luciano Moggi twice sending representatives to England in the last month to sound out both the player and Liverpool about a deal.
Moggi was preparing a bid of Jonathan Zebina plus £15 million for the Reds captain.

Drogba won't ask away from Chelsea

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba won't ask away, despite being booed by his own fans over his diving antics.

"Didier is very happy overall at Chelsea and wants to stay," a close adviser to the player told The Times. "It has been a difficult week for him, but he believes that nothing will be resolved by running away.
"The fans have hurt his feelings, but Didier knows he is valued by the people that matter at Chelsea - the manager and his team-mates. He works very hard for the team all the time and (José) Mourinho loves him. Although he is a striker, his first concern is his team-mates and he is not an individualist."

Victor wants Liverpool move

Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Victor admits he regrets not joining Liverpool in January.
Asked if there was a chance of moving to Anfield in the future, Victor said: "It is a possibility. It almost happened in the winter transfer window, but the president demanded new things and it couldn't take place. I know why, but I can't say."
The 29-year-old's contract expires at the end of the season when he'll be available on a Bosman transfer.

Liverpool's Warnock welcomes Aurelio signing

Liverpool wing-back Stephen Warnock says he's ready for the challenge should the club sign Valencia's Fabio Aurelio.

He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "This club is always going to sign players and there's always going to be competition here.
"Last summer we signed Bolo Zenden and the players on the left knew he was another player we'd have to compete with. If another left back comes in during the summer and it means I have to raise my game and do my best then that's fine.
"I'm sure John Arne Riise, Djimi Traore and Harry Kewell are thinking the same as well because I think Aurelio can also play in the midfield. If his arrival brings the best out of every player down that left side then it can only benefit us."

Giuly hints Arsenal's Henry going cold on Barcelona

Ludovic Giuly believes Thierry Henry may snub Barcelona because he won't accept spending time on the bench.
The Arsenal captain is a target for Barca, but France teammate Giuly says: "He's a player who always wants to be a starter.
"He wants to continually show his ability - he needs to express it. I don't know if he would accept not playing some games if he was to come to Barcelona.
"But that's something only he an answer."

Figo recommends Man Utd's Ronaldo to Real Madrid president

Despite his public blast at Real Madrid yesterday, Luis Figo maintains a good relationship with their board - including president Fernando Martin.
Sources close to the Inter Milan star told AS that Figo dined with Martin last week and told the Real supremo he was prepared to help him if he wanted to sign Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer.

Figo is good friends with Ronaldo and also his agent, Jorge Mendes. The 33 year-old told Martin that Ronaldo was the best in the world for his position and urged him to bid for the United star at the end of this season.

Real Madrid know Man Utd's Rooney reluctant to move abroad

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is aware of Real Madrid's interest.

Real president Fernando Martin is mapping out a long-term strategy to lure the England ace to Spain after being convinced by the club's marketing chiefs that the 20 year-old will become a bigger star than David Beckham.
Martin knows Real can outbid any contract United are willing to put in front of Rooney and would be prepared to almost double his current £2.3 million salary should the player indicate he's ready to move.
However, Rooney has made Real aware through intermediaries that he has no interest in playing abroad. Indeed, the striker chose United ahead of Chelsea two years ago because it was closer to his family base on Merseyside.

Deportivo La Coruna deal for Espanyol's Lopo

Deportivo La Coruna have clinched a deal for Espanyol defender Alberto Lopo.
The centre-half has agreed terms on a contract through to 2011 and will move to the Riazor in June on a Bosman, says AS.
Neither party has confirmed the news, but Lopo's representatives have been speaking regularly with Depor since January and a deal appears to have been agreed.

Roma's Panucci: Italy snub ridiculous

Roma fullback Christian Panucci says his omission from Italy's World Cup plans is a joke.

Panucci has been frozen out of the international scene ever since Marcello Lippi was handed the Italy job after Euro 2004.
Despite arguably being Italy's best right-back option, Lippi has left him out following an altercation between the pair during their time together at Inter.
"Italy is one of the few countries in the world where a player can be left out because he isn't liked," he told Italia 1 on Wednesday.
Although Panucci maintains that he is a better player than Palermo's Cristian Zaccardo, who Lippi has continually opted for, he's archived his Azzurri ambitions.
"Is Zaccardo better than me? I don't really think so," he commented. "Nevertheless, I'm not wasting my time thinking about it. I'd rather just forget about it."

Chelsea make new contact with Juventus ace Ibrahimovic

Chelsea have made contact with the agent of Juventus striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swede has emerged as a major target for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich after receiving little encouragement from the advisors of Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o.
Gazzetta dello Sport says Abramovich has held talks with Ibra's agent Mino Raiola and is well aware that the young forward has still not signed a new, long-term contract - despite agreeing terms some weeks ago.
Chelsea have shelved negotiations with Juve for now while they're involved in the Champions League, but will step up their pursuit once the Italian club's European campaign is over.

AC Milan battle Chelsea for Rennes starlet Goucuff

Chelsea and AC Milan are battling for Rennes whizkid Yoann Goucuff.
The 19 year-old has been compared with Zinedine Zidane and is off contract at the end of this season.
Rennes are trying to secure Goucuff to a new deal, but the interest of Chelsea and Milan has turned the youngster's head.

AC Milan clinch Poulsen after Villarreal talks

AC Milan have clinched an agreement for Schalke 04 midfielder Christian Poulsen.

Virglio Sport says Milan struck a deal with Villarreal officials this week which will see them pay the Spanish club £625,000 to sign Poulsen on a Bosman in the summer.
The fee is for Villarreal's agreement to end their pre-contract with Poulsen, which was struck before Milan came onto the scene. Milan and Villarreal officials thrashed out terms yesterday before the Spanish club's meeting with Inter.
Poulsen will arrive as cover for Rino Gattuso and is likely to signal the exit of Massimo Ambrosini, who has been linked with Real Madrid this week.

Agent: Arsenal's Henry open to Roma move

The Italian agent of Arsenal captain Thierry Henry has invited Roma to make a bid for the French ace.
"I have to be honest, I'll confirm Henry called Totti to wish him well after his injury, but I deny stories that he has discussed a transfer with Roma," agent Angelo Massone told Radio Incontro.
"Having said that, both I and Henry would not be unhappy if the matter developed further. If the Giallorossi were to call, I'd be on the plane within half an hour."

Chelsea confident of £150,000-a-week Shevchenko deal

Chelsea are ready to offer Hernan Crespo in a £25 million swap deal for AC Milan striker Andrei Shevchenko.

The Sun says Blues' billionaire owner Roman Abramovich has finally persuaded Shevchenko to quit Serie A for the Premiership.
Sources close to the deal confirm the Ukrainian's Italian agent Fabio Paresi met Abramovich in London late last year to set the ball rolling.
The Russian and the Ukrainian World Cup goal-machine are personal friends.
But Shevchenko has repeatedly told Abramovich his loyalty to Milan would not allow him to jump ship and move to Chelsea.
The striker was originally valued at £30m after he pipped Ronaldinho and Thierry Henry to the European Player of the Year title.
But Chelsea have knocked it down because Shevchenko is now 29.
Crespo is happy to go in the other direction. He and Blues boss Jose Mourinho had a bitter fall-out, paving the way for his return to the club where he spent most of last season on loan.
Chelsea will smash their wage structure to pay Shevchenko around £150,000 a week AFTER tax - which will trigger pay rises for both John Terry and Frank Lampard.

Arsenal's Henry: Cesc can match Ronaldinho, Rooney

Thierry Henry says Arsenal pal Cesc Fabregas can be as good as Wayne Rooney or Ronaldinho.

Henry, 28, said: "Cesc is an amazing talent. You don't often see players of that age with so much ability.
"Wayne Rooney was one and maybe Ronaldinho when he was younger. I hope for Cesc that he can have as successful a career.
"He has come on extremely well this season and you always see more of him when we play with five in the midfield.
"He has the nose to get into the box, knows when to join the attacks and when he has time on the ball.
"If you let him play he can kill a team right there."
But Henry warns against placing too great a burden on Fabregas' slender shoulders.
The French striker added: "I have always had huge faith in Cesc. But at the start of the season he wasn't playing that well and I remember people were having a go at him.
"Now he is performing fantastically and suddenly people are saying he is a genius and asking if he can become the best midfielder in the world.
"But if in a year's time he is not playing quite so well the same people will be asking 'What's happened to him?'. The important thing now is we must not go too far and get carried away. Cesc is doing extremely well and we just have to let him grow up and get on with it.
"But Cesc has already shown he can cope with all those expectations. You have some young players who have a strop if you have a go at them. But Cesc can handle it.
"I have always said Cesc is only a teenager in his body but in his head he is already old.
"You can see that just from the way he plays and handles himself. That is going to be a help throughout his career."

Man Utd boss delighted for matchwinner Van Nistelrooy

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson heaped praise on matchwinner Ruud van Nistelrooy after last night's 1-0 victory over West Ham.

The Dutchman ended his five-game exile with a 45th-minute winner.
United boss Fergie said: "Ruud is the best in Europe at that. It's the response we wanted to see. It was Ruud's first game for a few weeks and he needed that.
"He has scored a most important goal for us, a vital goal."
Van Nistelrooy was handed the captain's armband for the night and his goal took him back to the top of the Premiership scoring charts with 20.
Ferguson added: "It's not been easy for Ruud sitting on the bench but I think he understands that Louis Saha had to play in the Carling Cup final.
"And it has been impossible to leave Louis out since then given his tremendous scoring form.
"Some say I should play all three strikers - Ruud, Louis and Wayne Rooney - and that's possible against some formations.
"The thing that's certain is that all three will play their part and help us maintain the momentum that has seen us settle into some good form."
West Ham boss Alan Pardew said: "We can have no complaints about the result. Our defenders did a good job on Van Nistelrooy for the most part but he is a world-class striker.
"Players of that quality are rightly paid huge amounts of money because they take those chances to win games."

Parreira: I wish Liverpool's Gerrard was Brazilian

Brazil boss Carlos Parreira admits he wishes Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was Brazilian.
When asked which foreign players he has thought 'God, I wish he was a Brazilian', Parreira replied: "Andriy Shevchenko of Milan is a wonderful striker, who can do so many things inside the box, while centre-back
"Alessandro Nesta is among the best in the world. But of the English squad, Gerrard is a wonderful midfield player. He can really play."

Nedved: Juventus have no chance against Arsenal

Pavel Nedved says Juventus should throw in the towel ahead of their Champions League second-leg clash with Arsenal.

The Czech midfielder is available for the quarter-final second leg in Turin after missing Tuesday's Highbury defeat through suspension.
But the former European Footballer of the Year reckons the Gunners are already as good as through following their comprehensive 2-0 win.
Nedved admitted: "It will be very difficult for us to make something of this tie. In fact, maybe it is already over for us this year."
Nedved believes that any chance of turning the tie around disappeared when Patrick Vieira, Mauro Camoranesi and Jonathan Zebina all got themselves suspended on Tuesday.
He explained: "If we were at full strength for the return game then we might have had a chance. But now it will extremely hard.
"I am not looking forward to the match given the fact that we will have so many players missing.
"We played quite well at the start but once we conceded the first goal everything went wrong."

Liverpool confirm takeover talks

Liverpool have confirmed they're in talks that could lead to a takeover offer for the European champions.

In a statement, the club said that it was in "continuing discussions with a number of parties regarding a potential investment of new funds".
Liverpool added that such an investment "may include an offer for the entire share capital of the club".
The club's advisers said chairman David Moores might sell some of his majority stake for the right level of funds.
The club said that it was in talks with a shortlist of fewer than 10 possible investors.
A source has told Reuters Liverpool are seeking £200 million.

Quinn interested in buying Sunderland

Niall Quinn is interested in buying out Sunderland.

Current chairman Bob Murray has said he will sell his 56.8% stake in the club - if the right offer comes along.
BBC Sport says Quinn - who played for Sunderland between 1996 and 2002 - is understood to have spent several weeks looking at the viability of making a bid.
But it is not thought the 39-year-old has yet opened talks with Murray.
Sunderland have had a disastrous return to the Premiership after winning the Championship last season, picking up only 10 points and winning just two of their 31 games so far.
They could be relegated as early as this Saturday, should they drop points at Everton and West Brom beat Liverpool.
The Sportsman newspaper has said that speculation Quinn was keen on joining forces with horse racing magnate JP McManus was wide of the mark.
Sunderland are yet to comment on the rumours.

Chelsea unveil massive MLS link-up

Chelsea have unveiled a major link-up with United States soccer.

The London giants have announced a link-up with AEG, the group that own or operate the franchise for four clubs in the USA's Major Soccer League.
The agreement will come into effect in the summer of 2007 and Chelsea will have a special relationship with MLS champions LA Galaxy.
Chelsea will have first option to sign LA players and loan them youngsters.
"This is a unique, ground-breaking relationship," said Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon.
AEG is also involved with Chicago Fire, DC United and Houston Dynamo, it owns the Millennium Dome and build and operates sporting venues in America.
Chelsea's agreement with LA Galaxy will also involve an exchange of coaching and medical knowledge and personnel - and could be expanded to other clubs if it is successful.
The Premiership champions will also be involved in a reality television show that will reward the winner with a professional contract at Chelsea.
Kenyon added: "Chelsea is absolutely delighted to be partnering with AEG, the leading backer of soccer in the US.
"It will help Chelsea work towards its aim of becoming the most popular European club in the US, one of our key target markets."
The partnership will stage a tournament every two years involving Chelsea and a host MLS club, starting next year.

Agent: Spurs will miss out on Mido

The agent of Roma striker Mido has warned Tottenham they risk missing out on him in the summer.

The Egypt striker is on loan with Spurs until the end of the season and has expressed an interest in staying.
But the 22-year-old's agent, Mido Raiola, said: "We are talking to Tottenham, we are talking to Roma and to some other clubs.
"Although we have not excluded Tottenham, other clubs are ahead of them now."
Raiola has been surprised that Tottenham have not attempted to conclude a permanent deal.
"Tottenham have not expressed a willingness to conclude the deal and that has surprised me," added Raiola.
"I am not so confident that Tottenham are willing to invest the money they need to invest to get Mido.
"He is not on a free transfer and there are other teams, as big and even bigger than Tottenham, who have an appetite for Mido both in England and in Europe."
Mido moved to White Hart Lane on an 18-month loan deal in January 2005.

Arsenal's Cesc: I was right to leave Barcelona

Cesc Fabregas says Arsenal's Champions League success justifies his decision to quit Barcelona as a 16 year-old.

Fabregas was the star of Arsenal's 2-0 victory against Juventus at Highbury.
And the 18-year-old believes the quarter-final win proves he was right to leave home at such a tender age.
Fabregas said: "I am really happy to have made that decision when I was so young. So many people have believed in me so it's great."
The young Spain midfield star outshone former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira, scoring the opener and setting up Thierry Henry's crucial second.
But he is uncomfortable with claims he has come of age and matured as Vieira's natural successor.
Fabregas said: "I don't know and I don't like it. I have always tried my best. I work hard in every training session and I always give my best.
"In the last few weeks we have won games and done well and it reflects well on a player individually, but I don't think that's fair. It's the team.
"I am getting better. I feel stronger in training and I am playing better but it is also because the team is playing well. We are young and improving a lot as a team.
"I tried to do my best as usual. I like to show everyone that I can play for Arsenal and luckily for me I scored one goal and set up another.
"It is always difficult to play against midfielders like Patrick and Emerson. They are two of the best midfielders in the world.
"I am 18 and I had to play against them so I had to work hard for the team and that's what we did."

Fergie: Bad start and you're dead

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has issued a stark warning to clubs who are promoted to The Premiership.
With Reading already booking a place in next season's top flight, the Red Devils boss believes the secret is to get off to a good start.
He claims his theory has been supported by West Ham and Wigan Athletic's surprisingly impressive campaigns and Sunderland's dismal slide towards relegation.
"It's not easy coming out of the First Division into our Premiership," he informed Sky Sports News.
"It's a two-way street. You either go one way up the way or, if you don't get a good start, you go back the way like Sunderland. Unfortunately, they've experienced that very factor - if you don't get a good start, you're dead.
"West Ham and Wigan both had good starts and capitalised on those starts. When West Ham had a little blip, they had enough points to consolidate in mid-table, maybe just slightly below that, and the FA Cup run has galvanised them."
Ferguson is confident ahead of The Hammers' trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
"We've got a nice cushion [for second place]," he said.
"We obviously have big games coming up.
"We've got to go to Chelsea, Bolton and Tottenham - three massive games away from home, and we have five at home, but the way we're playing, I don't think it really matters who we play.
"The team is playing with great confidence and authority and hopefully, like anything else, you hope you don't get any serious injuries to your main players."

Real Madrid to test Glazers over Man Utd's Rooney

Real Madrid will attempt to prise Manchester United star Wayne Rooney away from Old Trafford before the start of next season.

Real president Fernando Martin expects to be sounded out by United intermediaries about his interest in Ruud van Nistelrooy and will take advantage of the opportunity by asking a price for Rooney.
Rooney's representatives held talks with Real Madrid when he first became available at Everton, but decided against going for the then 18 year-old over concerns with his personality.
However, Rooney's success at United has convinced Real's board to make a serious move for the England ace. Indeed, Real's top drawer marketing team see Rooney as a bigger endorsement earner than their own David Beckham.
Real are banking on United's American owners, the Glazer family, needing to make a big sale to balance the books in the summer.

Atletico Madrid move for Roma winger Mancini

Atletico Madrid are chasing Roma winger Mancini.

The Brazilian has long interested Spanish Liga clubs, with Valencia, Real Madrid and Barcelona all big admirers of the midfielder.
Atletico have already sounded out intermediaries about Mancini's availability and while he is contracted to Roma until 2009, the Madrid giants are convinced a bid of £8 million will land him.
Atletico already have agreed deals for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Tomas Rosicky and Getafe's left-sided winger Mariano Pernia. The priority now is a right-sided attacker, with Mancini top of their shopping list.

Portsmouth's Viafara wants Real Sociedad deal

Portsmouth midfielder John Viafara says he wants to sign permanently with Real Sociedad - even if they are relegated this season.

The Colombia international joined Real in January and has already been sent-off TWICE, but insists he's happy in San Sebastian.
"I see my future here at Real, despite the reports," said Viafara. "I'm happy here, in the city.
"If it was up to me, I'd stay. But in football these things are out of your hands.
"The club hasn't spoken to me. But now is not the time, we must beat relegation."

Chelsea's Crespo favours Inter Milan return

Chelsea striker Hernan Crespo admits he misses Italy and Serie A football.

However, while the Argentine has been linked with a return to AC Milan next season, he admits city rivals Inter are the club he favours.
"My heart for the challenge at the San Siro is with Inter," said Crespo when asked about the Milan derby. "I've never forgotten the year with the Nerazzurro.
"And goodness knows I would love to experience that again in the future ..."
However, Crespo was quick to add he was contracted to Chelsea until 2008.

Capello blasts Juventus players over dismissals

Juventus coach Fabio Capello turned on his players after last night's dramatic 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.
The Bianconeri ended the game in nine men after both Mauro Camoranesi and Jonathan Zebina committed second bookable offences.

"What really disappoints me the most are the red cards, as these are things a team like Juventus cannot accept. We will have a little chat, because mistakes of this kind are unacceptable. I think Zebina's second was a little bit over the top from the referee, as it wasn't an ugly foul. Nonetheless, we should be more careful."
The 2-0 result at Highbury means that Juve must win 3-0 at the Delle Alpi on April 5 to reach the final four, but will be playing without the suspended Patrick Vieira, Camoranesi, Zebina and probably still injured Alessandro Del Piero.
"It's a heavy scoreline, but now we must focus on Treviso and think about that later," noted Capello. "The truth is we had three or four chances to shoot and Kolo Toure performed some crucial tackles, but I guess it is the right result on the night. We tried to play the ball, at times went for the long ball, but we conceded the goal because we weren't set out in the right positions. It had been a totally even game up until then."
The former Milan and Real Madrid tactician also analysed why Juve were so comprehensively limited in London.
"Arsenal were constantly doubling up on our wide men and Jose Antonio Reyes was acting almost as a full-back, so it was difficult to push down the flanks. We couldn't get the final pass through for one reason or another, whereas Arsenal did achieve that a few times. They play on the counter-attack and have remarkable pace when they burst forward from their own half like that with Henry as the lone striker. I think we will be able to change some things and do better in Turin. The pitch is a problem, but we'll have to try to make it work in our favour."
Capello has not lost hope of his first Champions League trophy since Milan thrashed Barcelona 4-0 in 1994.
"We need to have faith and I always do. We'll play with determination and grit. I have to say Arsenal had something extra in terms of physical stamina after essentially resting for 10 days. I've seen them play a few times and a defence is solid when everyone works hard to cover for them, which they do effectively right now."

Buffon: Juventus struggle against Premiership opposition

Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon has hinted his team doesn't know how to play against Premiership teams.
Juve are on the verge of being eliminated from the Champions League for the second time in two years by English opposition after last night's 2-0 defeat at Arsenal.

Buffon said: "When a team like Arsenal takes the lead and has a player like Thierry Henry, they can focus on the counter-attack and his extraordinary pace. Perhaps it got on our nerves to see that even at the 90th minute Henry had such strength and pace, so the challenges went in a little later than usual. I'm not sure if that lack of sharpness is a physical or a psychological issue."
Buffon also explains what went awry on a tactical level in London and the similarities to last year's quarter-final exit to Liverpool.
"We had talked about trying to give them as little opportunity as possible to hit us on the break, but in my view we instead stopped playing altogether. Evidently we didn't understand the Coach's requests. It's a similar game to the one we lost at Liverpool. I don't know if we suffer the English climate, but at least at Anfield we had scored an away goal. There was a sense of déjà vu."

Liverpool ask Empoli for Tavano info

Empoli striker Francesco Tavano is emerging as one of the hottest properties on the market.
While Tavano has expressed an ambition to join Fiorentina, some of Europe's biggest clubs have made enquiries with Empoli about the forward.
Real Madrid, Liverpool, Valencia, Hamburg and Bayern Munich have all asked about Tavano, who saw a £7 million bid from Shakhtar Donetsk rejected by Empoli in January.

AC Milan's Ancelotti admits interest in Lyon stars

AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti admits they're interested in several of Lyon's players.
The two clubs meet tonight in the Champions League quarterfinals and Ancelotti said: "We're now opponents ... but next season , who knows?
"Lyon have many interesting players."
Lyon stars Mahmadou Diarra, Cris and Francois Clerc have all attracted serious interest from Milan this season.

Reds reveal takeover talks

Liverpool have confirmed they are in talks with investors about a possible takeover bid for the club.
The European champions have been seeking potential investment for some time as they look to fund plans to move away from Anfield.
Spanish tycoon Juan Villalonga is the latest name to be linked with gaining a financial interest in the club.
The likes of local businessman Steve Morgan, the Thailand government and American investors the Kraft group have all been credited with an interest in investing in Liverpool, but no deal came to fruition.
However, the club have now confirmed that they have held talks with a number of investors which could lead to an offer for the club.
"The board of Liverpool FC has noted the recent press speculation concerning possible third-party investment into the club and can confirm that it is continuing discussions with a number of parties regarding a potential investment of new funds into the club," read a club statement.
"Although the structure of any such investment is uncertain, it may include an offer for the entire share capital of the club.
"Shareholders will be kept updated as appropriate." Current Liverpool chairman David Moores has a 51 percent stake in the club and it is believed he is ready to sell his stake so that new funds can be made available.

No go for Del Horno

Chelsea defender Asier Del Horno may be set to miss this summer's World Cup finals with Spain.
The former Athletic Bilbao player has fallen out of favour with La Furia Roja after the left back failed to attend an informal 'get-together' earlier this month.
His absence far from impressed Spain boss Luis Aragones, who stated his intention not to call him back into his squad.
"The red shirt is sacred for me and anyone who does not think like that will not be going to the to the World Cup," Aragones said.
"Asier was summoned for the last get-together, but missed the plane.
"For that reason, he does not come back into the squad."

Viduka keeps options open

Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka has admitted he is keeping his options over his future open.
The Australian international has hinted he could move on in the summer in the search of regular first team football.
Viduka has recently won his place back in the starting line-up after playing second fiddle to Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink earlier this season.
Reports from his native Australia have linked Viduka with a move away from Middlesbrough and the former Celtic and Leeds hit-man will consider his future at the end of the season.
"I'm contracted for another year but obviously I want to be playing football," said Viduka.
"To be honest, I don't know where that came from in the Aussie media but we'll have to wait and see.
"I'm a professional. I do my job every time I go on the pitch and give my best - that's all I can do."

Tottenham eyeing Fenerbahce striker Anelka

Fenerbahce striker Nicolas Anelka is in the sights of Tottenham boss Martin Jol.
Jol admitted over the weekend he wanted a new forward in the summer to balance his squad and France Football says he wants to bring ex-Arsenal star Anelka back to North London.
The French international is keen to return to England and has admitted he'd like to rejoin Liverpool.

Wigan to bid for Bolton's Pedersen

Wigan Athletic are ready to swoop for Bolton Wanderers striker Henrik Pedersen.
Jewell will offer £250,000 for the out-of-favour Danish utility player, 32.
Pedersen, who still has more than 12 months left to run on his current deal, has struggled to nail down a regular first-team spot at Bolton this term

Man City battle to keep Sturridge from Chelsea, Arsenal

Along with Micah Richards, Manchester City are also anxious to tie teenage striker Danny Sturridge to a pro contract.

The 16-year-old has been watched by Chelsea and Arsenal all season as free-scoring City blazed a trail to the FA Youth Cup final against Liverpool next month but plans are in place to make sure the schoolboy, who has turned out for the reserves this season and trained with the first team, stays and develops.
"Everything that a youngster could want in terms of career progression is here," says Academy chief Jim Cassell, whose staff's record of grooming first team stars is among the best in the country.
"We have a team in place that will promote youth team players into the Premiership when they are ready, we have a fan base and facilities second to none and what's more we have a chairman, chief executive and board that is determined to find and develop young talent."

Liverpool deny Auxerre payments linked with Cisse axe

Liverpool officials have dismissed theories that Djibril Cissé is not being picked because extra fees would be paid to Auxerre after a certain number of appearances.
Cissé has started only two of the past 14 matches, but the club have told The Times that no such clause exists.

Bolton green light for Tal signing

Bolton Wanderers have been given the green light to sign Maccabi Haifa winger Idan Tal on a Bosman.
Wanderers delayed the move for midfielder Tal - whose agent is Allardyce's son Craig - while checks were made and the FA informed, but chairman Phil Gartside is happy everything is above board.
Allardyce said: "The final word is always down to the chairman who makes the decision. We will move forward with it."

Rijkaard hails 'good result'

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard was content despite his side failing to make the most of a number of very presentable opportunities in a goalless draw with Benfica.
A compelling UEFA Champions League quarter final first leg failed to produce a goal but it was not for the want of trying with Barca being particularly profligate.
"Unfortunately, we have not been able to mark our good performance with a goal, but a draw abroad is a good result," said Rijkaard.
"It was a pity because we have had some good chances.
"In some phases of the game Benfica have also been dangerous and I believe that in general we cannot complain."
The Dutchman was particularly pleased that his side performed as well as they did given the absence of the suspended Carles Puyol and the injured Rafael Marquez and Edmilson.
"The players made a good impression and, considering the losses, it is necessary to congratulate them."

Arsenal give ragged Juventus lesson

Arsenal stormed to a superb 2-0 victory over Juventus in last night's Champions League quarterfinal at Highbury.
Cesc Fabregas put Arsenal ahead with a low strike from 20 yards and later passed for Thierry Henry to convert into an empty net from 12 yards out.
Juventus keeper Gianluigi Buffon made good second-half saves from Henry, Fabregas and Alexander Hleb.
Mauro Camoranesi and Jonathan Zebina were both sent off late in the match.
Juventus might be eight points ahead at the top of Serie A but they were a ragged mess by the end of the match.
They had heavy legs and bowed heads after being blown away by an Arsenal side that played with great verve and invention.
Arsenal's clean sheet means they have now gone seven matches without conceding in the Champions League - equaling the record set by AC Milan last season.
It was a difficult return to Highbury for Patrick Vieira, who received a warm reception but then went on to pick up a second-half booking that means he, along with Camoranesi and Zebina, will miss the return leg.

Arsenal, Chelsea warn Real Madrid off managers

Arsenal and Chelsea have told Real Madrid to forget about trying to prise away their managers.

Real president Fernando Martin named Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger on a managerial shortlist on Monday.
"Arsene Wenger has repeatedly made his position clear. He is happy here and is not planning to move," an Arsenal spokesperson told the Evening Standard.
A Chelsea representative said: "Chelsea and Mourinho are united in an exciting and long-term project."

Man Utd's Ferguson: Rules favour divers

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says football's rules are loaded in favour of divers.

"The problem has been there for quite a few years and it is obvious it has got worse," said Ferguson. "The difficult thing is how do you stop it.
"The players diving have an advantage over the ones making a tackle.
"A lad going to make an honest tackle can receive a red card yet referees can only give the guy, who cheats to win a penalty or someone sent, off a yellow."
Ferguson added: "You could give someone two yellows I suppose but that is not going to have any impact. It is a discrepancy which is always going to cause controversy."
The Old Trafford boss is rarely a fan of referees but revealed he does have some sympathy for the officials trying to marshal the game.
He said: "The jostling emerged four or five years ago and it is getting worse all the time.
"It is taken from Italian football because when you see one of their games, it is like watching a wrestling match.
"You can't get a free-kick or a corner kick without having an absolute melee.
"They are all doing it and it is an impossible task for a referee to sort it out. Even if you had six referees they would find it difficult."

Liverpool told £10M for Inter Milan's Solari

Liverpool have approached Inter Milan for want-away midfielder Santiago Solari.
The Argentina international has declared he may quit Inter in the summer after only one season in Italy. Solari has failed to hold down a first team place since his arrival from Real Madrid and is anxious for regular football.
The Mirror says Inter have informed Liverpool intermediaries that £10 million will get them Solari.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez is desperate to land a quality winger having failed in bids for Benfica's Simao and Chelsea attacker Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Real Madrid president reveals coaching shortlist

Real Madrid president Fernando Martin has announced England manager Sven Goran Eriksson is on the club's coaching shortlist for next season.

Martin said Real were also interested in Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, Liverpool's Rafael Benitez and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
Italians Carlo Ancelotti, Fabio Capello and Marcello Lippi complete the list.
"It is going to come from one of seven coaches," said Martin. "We are clear about what type of coach we want."
Speaking to Spanish television station Antena 3, Martin refused to rank the candidates in order of preference.
"No other thing can be said because I believe I have to be prudent," he said.
"What I can say is that we have to try to build a team possible of the best for next year and a basic element of a better team is the coach."

Ronaldo won't commit to Real Madrid

Ronaldo says he'll make a decision on his future at Real Madrid after the World Cup.

"I'll decide my future after the World Cup," the Brazilian ace said. "It's the only thing I can say at the moment.
"I don't know if I'll continue at Real Madrid or not. The one thing I do know is that I want to be seen as a help not a hindrance."
Ronaldo also reopened his row with the Santiago Bernabeu crowd - and club captain Raul in the Sao Paulo interview.
"The fans should not boo you, even when things aren't going well, when there's a chance of winning the game.
"It's not the first time I've asked for their support. When I won the Ballon d'Or, the following game they just wanted to cheer Raul."

Real Madrid's Helguera seeks move away

Real Madrid defender Ivan Helguera is ready to slap in a transfer request.
Fed-up with being ignored by coach Juan Roman Lopez Caro, Helguera has instructed his agent to sound out interested clubs - even though he only signed a new deal this season.
Helguera is seeking talks with Real vice-president Emilio Butragueno about his future this week.

Liverpool's Xabi: Real Sociedad breaking my heart

Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso admits he fears for former club Real Sociedad.
"They're not experiencing the best of times and it breaks my heart," said the former Real star. "The change of coach obviously has unsettled things - but it is the players that win games.
"Now we can only hope that the new coach (Jose Bakero) can change the situation.
"He knows the club well and despite his lack of experience, is a football man. He is a great motivator and could be just what the players need at this time."

Man Utd, West Ham closer to Duscher deal

Deportivo La Coruna coach Joaquin Caparros is urging president Augusto Cesar Lendoiro to drop plans of selling midfielder Aldo Duscher.
Manchester United are favourites to land the Argentina international, who has just over a year left on his contract and admits it will be "difficult to continue" at the Riazor.
Lendoiro has received enquiries from both United and West Ham and needs to cash in on Duscher to balance the books. United and West Ham have already told the midfielder's representatives he can expect a big pay-rise on his current Depor deal should he choose to quit in the summer.

Juventus ace Del Piero gutted to miss Arsenal trip

Juventus captain Alessandro del Piero has sent a message to Arsenal: 'I'll see you in Turin!'.
Del Piero is a big admirer of Arsenal and their manager Arsene Wenger and is gutted that he will miss tonight's Champions League clash at Highbury.
"I have a slight thigh injury and will spend the day having it examined to check on the extent of the damage," said Del Piero.
"I am very disappointed at not being able to play at Arsenal's Highbury stadium before they move to their new ground. But I have a message for the Gunners: I'll see you in Turin!"

Lyon's Cris delighted with AC Milan interest

Lyon defender Cris admits he welcomes interest from AC Milan.
The Brazil international said: "I have three years on my contract and Lyon is in my heart, but I cannot hide that I love Milan and that the Rossonera shirt appeals to me.
"I hope there is more than just some interest from Milan. I know that the general manager has come to see me, I know that there's a lot of talk, but I have not had any contact."

Agent: Doni's Roma future known in 2 weeks

The agent of Roma goalkeeper Alexandre Doni has denied reports linking the Brazilian with Juventus.

"The stories involving Juventus are wrong," said Mario Melli. "We're still talking with Roma about his new contract.
"We have bigger offers from foreign clubs, but will wait for Roma as Doni is very grateful to the Sensi family for their support.
"Roma have offered £400,000-a-year. They want him to stay and we'll know the answer in the next two weeks."

Lazio reject AC Milan, Spurs enquiries for Oddo

AC Milan have made a formal approach in the last 24 hours to Lazio for fullback Massimo Oddo.
Milan asked Lazio president Claudio Lotito to open negotiations about the Italy international, but received a negative response.
Lotito won't consider selling Oddo for anything less than an "astronomical figure". Along with Milan, Lazio have also rejected enquiries from Valencia and Tottenham.

Real Madrid go for exciting Empoli striker Tavano

Real Madrid are ready to open talks with Empoli for striker Francesco Tavano.

Real's Italian agent, Enzo Bronzetti, has confirmed their interest in Tavano with speculation in Italy stating that the forward is being targeted on request of Real's new coach.
Real president Fernando Martin unveiled their coaching shortlist today - with three Italians, Carlo Ancelotti (AC Milan), Fabio Capello (Juventus) and Marcello Lippi (Italy) included.

Bolton's Stelios desperate for Liverpool move

Stelios Giannakopoulos has rocked Bolton Wanderers by admitting he wants to join Liverpool.

Stelios said: "I would give everything to go to Liverpool.
"That's my dream. Not only to go to Liverpool but, in general, to go to a bigger team.
"Then I would say that I have reached the peak of my career.
"That's my vision and I am working hard every week to make Liverpool or any big team chase my signature.
"I've become more stubborn since last season when I didn't go to Liverpool, although their official proposal gave me moral satisfaction."
The winger's comments are sure to alert Benitez, who believes it is his side's lack of width that has contributed to Liverpool's goalscoring problems since he became manager at Anfield two years ago.

Shevchenko tired of Chelsea rumours

AC Milan striker Andrei Shevchenko admits he's fed up with rumours linking him with Chelsea.

"I am annoyed by the Chelsea rumours," he told L'Equipe. "I have three years remaining on my contract.
"Today, I only think about Milan and ending the season in the best way.
"And then? I don't want to talk about it. It is nonsense now.
"I repeat it: I am fine at Milan.
"I've already said I want to end my career here, even if you can't plan for it in football.
"Would I like to become a 'Milanist' for my whole life, like Franco Baresi or Paolo Maldini? Yes.
"But I would never give up a national cap for money. Even if I play for a club I love, I am and will remain a Ukrainian."

Chelsea players concerned over Mourinho future

Chelsea players remain concerned that manager Jose Mourinho could be on his way from Stamford Bridge.

The Guardian says chatter in the players' lounge after the narrow win against Newcastle United last week continued to centre on the speculation about the Portuguese manager's future, several days after reports that he would move to Inter Milan were furiously denied.
Attempts to end the speculation can hardly have been helped by the raised voices in the Chelsea dressing room after the 1-0 defeat at Craven Cottage.
Fulham players recognised one voice as Mourinho's; the other did not belong to any Chelsea player.

Arsenal boss reveals he almost signed Ibrahimovic

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits he could've landed Juventus ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic six years ago.
"He was here as a young man, but he chose to go to Ajax," Wenger said yesterday at the club's London Colney training headquarters. "I have always regretted not signing him."

Arsenal keep tabs on Chelsea's Gallas

Arsenal are keeping tabs on William Gallas' situation at Chelsea.
The Mirror says the Gunners have joined Juventus and AC Milan in monitoring the situation.
Gallas, 28, has been linked with a move as he is unhappy at not being played in his strongest position - centre-back.
His agent Issa Traore said: "Milan are interested and so are Arsenal."

Chelsea fans could drive out Drogba

The uncle of Chelsea striker Didier Drogba says the Ivory Coast ace could be driven out of Stamford Bridge by his own fans.

Former pro footballer Michel Goba was at Stamford Bridge on Saturday when Drogba was booed by Blues fans, despite scoring both goals in the 2-0 win over Manchester City.
Goba told The Sun: "I believe Didier could leave if he kept hearing whistling from Chelsea supporters. He is being made to feel very alone at the moment.
"He simply cannot understand how he can be elected Man of the Match and have some of Chelsea's own supporters turn against him. He is very disappointed by that.
"It is not right that Didier should carry all that people complain about in modern football on his own back. It would not surprise me if he looked to go elsewhere in the event some Chelsea fans keep insulting him."

Agent admits Baros considering Villa future

Aston Villa striker Milan Baros' contract has a buyout clause - set at £15 million.

Baros joined for £6.5m from Liverpool last summer but has struggled to impress, despite scoring 10 goals this term.
And he is understood to be unhappy with the grim relegation fight he has had to endure in the Midlands.
Baros' agent Pavel Paska confirmed: "Of course we think about the possible transfer out of Villa after the World Cup. There's an option in Milan's contract for this case."

Wenger: Vieira won't bully Arsenal kids

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is adamant Juventus midfielder Patrick Vieira won't intimidate his young players tonight.

Wenger said: "There won't be any psychological barrier.
"Part of a player's career is not to be intimidated on the big occasions. The players have a big respect for Patrick but in the game they'll show they just want to win.
"For us it's a massive opportunity to do something special. We want to deliver that."
Wenger believes Vieira could be the one who is overawed.
He added: "When you come back somewhere you've played for nine years you want to be on top of your game.
"But emotionally it will not be an easy situation to deal with. That can also be intimidating sometimes."
