Atletico Madrid's Torres passes Man Utd test

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to launch a serious bid for Atletico Madrid striker Fernando Torres.

A well-known Premiership coach has told AS that Torres was scouted by United in Spain's recent friendly against Croatia and his scoring performance was the final push Ferguson needed to settled on the young forward.

Ferguson sees Torres as the man to succeed Ruud van Nistelrooy, who will be sold after the World Cup. Valencia have expressed interest, while United are banking on the Dutchman having a big German tournament to bring Real Madrid and Barcelona back to the table.

Ferguson has been following Torres for over three years and AS says English sources are insisting a deal is all but done for next season.
