Manchester United are interested in Benfica midfielder Petit.
The Guardian says Sir Alex Ferguson has identified the 29-year-old after he was recommended to him by United's assistant manager Carlos Queiroz.
Petit, a left-sided player who helped to eliminate United from last season's Champions League, broke off from his preparations for Portugal's World Cup game against Iran on Saturday to confirm he was giving strong consideration to moving to Old Trafford.
Asked if United had made formal contact, he replied: "Yes, it is true. I have received the offer of a contract from Manchester United."
