Wigan boss Jewell: I'd have broken bank for Ashton

Wigan boss Paul Jewell says he would have been ready to smash the club's transfer record to land West Ham striker Dean Ashton.

The ex-Norwich hitman fired West Ham into the FA Cup semi-finals on Monday with a double against Manchester City.
But if Jewell had got his way, £7.25million Ashton - who visits the JJB Stadium in the Premiership on Saturday - would have been a Wigan player.
Jewell said: "We offered Norwich £6m in the summer but they wanted £10m. We enquired about him again but he wanted to go to West Ham."
