Newcastle favouring Roeder-Houllier combo

Glenn Roeder's chances of winning the Newcastle job fulltime have strengthened after it emerged that chairman Freddy Shepherd plans to install a two-tier management structure.

Shepherd and his board are due to finalise their plans next week, but the Toon supremo now favours a manager working under a director of football.
Roeder has put himself in pole position for the coaching role after an astonishing run of results. A win over Birmingham on Saturday would virtually guarantee a Euro slot.
Shepherd has a short-list of senior partners to work with him. Lyon and former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier is the front-runner if he can be persuaded to quit the French champions.
